Iraqi Kurdistan has surprised me in so many ways, and going on this adventure in the Zagros Mountains was definitely one of them.
The Zagros Mountain range is a long and vast mountainous area, located partly in Iran and the northern part of Iraq,
Although I have been traveling through Iraq and Kurdistan a lot, I always go with someone who really knows the area, either a local or a guide. Never go hiking on your own. There are still instabilities in the country, and you need someone who knows the area.
That said, here are five beautiful things that happened to me on this trip. Let’s go!

Iraq’s Zagros Mountain: 5 Wonders
1. Arriving at Zagros Mountain
When we arrived at the foot of the mountain, we entered a small local village.
We saw kids playing with a ball, and got an honest look into the daily Kurdish life in this rural area.
It always surprised me how friendly and welcoming the Kurds are.

2. Formation of the Zagros Mountains
We started our journey close to the village of Akre in northern Iraq.

3. The True Essence of Travel: Connecting with locals
Exploring a small mountain town nestled within the Zagros Mountain range can be an amazing experience for travelers seeking authentic encounters with locals and the unique community in the mountains. These towns offer a glimpse into traditional ways of life and a chance to connect with the warm and welcoming Kurds who call the mountains home.
Experiences like this are truly unique. It is one of the perks of living in Kurdistan for about two years. You get to meet locals, much more than during a holiday for a week.
4. Children warned us of any dangers
During our time in the small mountain town, the children warned us about potential dangers in the area. One little girl spoke English well and told us a drone attack had happened close by the week before.
Kinda crazy to hear that! But we still began our hike. Luckily, I was with several folks from the Dutch army, and they knew what they were doing.

This was only the start of the hike, what followed was a beautiful journey…
5. Breathtaking Perspectives: An Incredible View
Exploring the Zagros Mountain range offers an incredible view at the top you’ll get as a reward for finishing the trail.

It’s a hidden, and unfortunately, not a very safe, paradise. Especially when we met these kids in the village, it feels so sad to know that they can not live here safely and that they will have to live with the political instabilities for the coming time.
6. Godzilla’s Sanctuary: Hidden in the Mountains
One of the most intriguing natural formations in the Zagros Mountains is a rock formation that strikingly resembles the back of Godzilla! The weather was perfect; misty, some rain and purple rays of light from the sun were coming through the clouds. What an epic photo!

The rock formation, with its uncanny resemblance to Godzilla’s iconic fins. I think we were there just in the right time at the right place for this unique photo.

But wasn’t the only thing we’ve discovered.
7. The Shepherd’s Home
When we arrived at the very top of the mountain, we found these shepherd homes. I guess they built these small constructions to take a break, save some gear they need, and stock up on some food and drinks.
A fascinating look into life in the region of Kurdistan.
From these vantage points, shepherds oversee their flocks grazing on the mountain slopes, creating a scene of harmony between humans and nature. I wonder if they fall asleep a lot counting their sheep!

In Kurdistan you will not only find sheep in the mountains but even right in the city, flocks of sheep will cross the street many times during the day on their way to a new field of grass to eat.

8. Reality Check
You know what really surprised me about Iraqi Kurdistan? I went in expecting nothing but desert and sand dunes (shame on me, I know) basically what you see in most Middle Eastern coverage. But it’s actually this incredibly green, mountainous region that’ll completely change how you think about Iraq.
The Zagros Mountains up north are honestly breathtaking. We were there just before spring, so it wasn’t too green yet, but still beautiful.
The thing is, Kurdistan’s still relatively unknown to most travelers, which means you’re not dealing with crowds at the scenic spots. It’s one of those places where the reality on the ground is so different from what people assume, including me.

Final Thoughts
Hiking through Kurdistan’s nature has blown my mind in ways I never expected! Seriously, I had no idea Erbil and surrounding nature was packed with such diverse and stunning landscapes. From lush valleys to rugged mountains, every step I took revealed a new surprise.
The Thrill of Discovery
It’s these unknown places that really catch you off guard. You think you’ve seen it all, but then you find yourself in a hidden valley or stumbling upon a crystal-clear stream that looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. That’s the magic of Kurdistan—it’s full of these hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.
Beyond the Average Holiday
This is what I love about staying abroad longer than your typical vacation.
You get the chance to dig deeper and really explore. It’s not just about ticking off the tourist spots; it’s about uncovering the secrets of a place.
The longer you stay, the more you get to see the real heart and soul of the land. You find those hidden places that most tourists miss, and that’s where the real adventure begins.

A Journey of Surprises
Every hike here feels like a new adventure.
One day you’re walking through a valley, and the next you’re climbing a mountain with epic views. It’s a mix of awe and excitement that keeps you going, always wondering what’s around next.
So, if you’re thinking about where to go next, put Kurdistan on your list. Stay a while, explore the unknown, and let this amazing place surprise you just like it did for me. Trust me, it’s worth it.
