Local townsWhat’s also great about these hiking areas in Iraq are the local towns close to them and the people that live there. These towns couldn’t be more local and authentic; traditional outfits, wild chickens running on the streets and no sign of international tourism, I love it! People are very open and friendly and most of them don’t mind it when you take photos. Variety of TrailsOne of the most extraordinary things about hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan is the variety of trails. Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, there’s something here for everyone. The northern part of Iraq is all about snow-peaked mountains, beautiful valleys, canyons, rivers, and waterfalls. No touristsBesides, there are almost no tourists in these areas. You’ll feel really remote and far away from civilization, which is awesome. Culturally richAlso, the region boasts a wealth of cultural and historical sites, including ancient ruins, fortresses, neanderthal caves, citadels, and sacred shrines, providing a fascinating touch to the adventure. Wild LifeTo my surprise there is quite some wild life to discover in the mountains in the northern part of Iraq. I’ve seen deers, mountain goats, vultures, eagles, wild cows, donkeys and horses. It is something I didn’t expect as well, just as how green these mountains can be in spring.Snow-peaked mountainsQuite some months of the year most of the mountains have a lot of snow. Which I never expected in the middle east! Even quite close to Erbil on surrounding mountains that are not even that high, you will see beautiful snow-covered peaks. Low crime rateAnother pro is that the crime rate is super low. You will not have to worry about your car, stuff, or anyone wanting to steal something. Kurdish people are kind and helpful and will assist you whenever they can.
