However, navigating the city’s streets can be daunting (traffic is crazy!), especially for first-time visitors.

Renting a Car in Erbil
Renting a car in Erbil unlocks a world of possibilities for travelers.
Whether you’re eager to explore the city’s historical sites or embark on a scenic road trip through the Kurdish countryside, having your own vehicle offers convenience.
Here are 7 reasons why you should rent a car in Erbil:
- There is basically no public transport.
- Careem taxis are widely available, but they can drive like crazy, and it can be hard to find a taxi in the evening.
- Some taxis are not with Careem, which is illegal, so you need to be careful not to overpay.
- During summer, walking or going anywhere other than a car without an AC is way too hot.
- Because of the hot weather, you will always want to have water with you. In a car, it is easy to keep plenty.
- Exploring the mountains requires a car; taking a taxi is not convenient, as it will be hard to find one on the way back.
- Finally, everything in Erbil is done by car. Want to go to the supermarket? Take the car. Want to go to Citadel? Take the car. It is impossible to ride a bike or walk anywhere. This city is not made for pedestrians!

On the Road in Erbil: Uncovering the Ins and Outs
Before hitting the road, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with Erbil’s city layout and traffic patterns. While navigating the city may seem daunting at first, it is actually set up pretty straight forward.
Erbil is divided into several districts, each offering unique attractions and landmarks. Downtown Erbil is home to bustling bazaars and historic sites, while areas like Ankawa and Shaqlawa offer a more relaxed escape from the city.
Erbil’s main roads are built in a circle. This makes it quite easy to understand the logistics of the city.
What’s the best car to rent in Erbil?
There are many options regarding car rental in Erbil. The best option, in my opinion, would be a Mitsubishi Pajero or a Toyota Prado.
There are many potholes in the road, so you will need a strong and reliable car.

Besides the standard cars, other options are some American muscle cars (my favorites!). You will see a lot of Mustang Chargers and Challengers driving around in Erbil.
These are actually so much fun to drive.
Not the most environmentally friendly car but I always wanted to drive a car like this for a day!

The price of renting a Challenger was 100 dollar for one day, all in, excluding gas.

Getting gas
Along the way, you will probably need some gas. At most gas stations, the gas station employee will fill up the tank for you, so you don’t have to get out of the car. Just let them know what kind of fuel you need. Very convenient!
Most cars run on gasoline in Erbil. My go to gas station is Kurfdneft.
You can choose between “normal” and “improved“. They say the quality of the gasoline is better of improved but I would just go for “normal” as improved is quite more expensive.
Gas price is around 75 dollar cent per liter.
Remember to always have cash (dinars or American dollars) on you. Some gas stations might accept credit cards but cash is king in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Traffic lights
At busy traffic lights you will see folks selling things like tissues and flowers.
In my experience, they have always been friendly, and if you make a friendly gesture that you’re not interested, it is totally fine.
It’s a reminder of the tough environment people have to live in, in Iraq.
Choosing the Right Erbil Car Rental Company
Before embarking on your Erbil (hiking?) adventure, selecting a reputable car rental company that meets your needs and budget is wise.
Personally, I have had a good experience with Avis Care Rental. It can be found in the Divan Hotel. So if you are staying there, this might be a convenient option.
At the airport, you will find Hertz and Europcar.
Safety Considerations
While Erbil is generally considered safe for travelers, it’s essential to exercise caution on the road.
People drive differently than what you are probably used to, plus you can encounter anything on the road in Erbil. People cross the highway on foot, you’ll see flocks of sheep, people are cycling, and cars can just come out of nowhere. Read here what it is like to drive in Iraq.
If you are driving outside of the city always travel with someone that is familiar with the area. Driving with two cars is the best option in case one of them fails.
Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
Following Traffic Rules and Regulations
Obey traffic laws, speed limits, and road signs while driving in Erbil. There are quite some speed cameras that are usually pretty unvisible.
The maximum speed on the highway furthest from Erbil is 110 km/hour.
Avoid reckless behavior, such as speeding or distracted driving, to minimize the risk of accidents or collisions.
Even though people are generally friendly, things can be different on the road. I’m not even kidding.
There’s always someone on the road who thinks he can drive like a maniac…

Bring cash for parking
In most of the areas, parking is free, even at malls or shopping areas. Some areas require a fee, like at the Citadel. The price is around 3000 dinars (+-2 dollars)
Interacting with Locals Respectfully
Engage with locals with courtesy and respect. Be open-minded and receptive to cultural differences.
Especially on the road, people just drive differently than you are probably used to. Just accept it and don’t get frustrated about it because it can sometimes be frustrating to see the things on the road in Iraq.
And always ask for permission before taking photos of individuals. Generally, Kurds are super friendly and don’t mind pictures.

Dealing with Emergencies
While I hope you’ll have a smooth and trouble-free journey, it’s essential to be prepared for any unexpected emergencies that may arise. Here’s what to do in case of emergencies while driving in Erbil:
