At Allan's Beach you walk about 100 meters and you are already next to a huge sea lion. It was honestly one of those moments I keep thinking about.

You walk down a steep track and then through a hand-carved tunnel that opens onto a secluded beach surrounded by sandstone cliffs. It really does feel like a secret.

We showed up and could not really find a path without a tour. I would honestly look into the official tours before you go.

Quieter Than You Expect

In January at Allan's Beach there was actually nobody else around. It was a really different experience from Mount Cook, which was completely packed.

Stay on the Peninsula

I would really advise staying on the peninsula rather than in Dunedin city. The Ocean View Car Park is free and right by the beach.
